Wie de natuur wil ontdekken, hoeft de stad niet uit. Geïnspireerd door documentairemakers zoals Jorens Ivens en Bert Haanstra, ging Suzanne van Leendert op zoek naar verbinding met de natuur in de stad. Het resultaat is een poëtische, associatieve en experimentele film die zich door de seizoenen heen richt op een stuk water midden in de stad. Een stuk water van nog geen anderhalve kilometer waar zich meer afspeelt dan je denkt…
Suzanne richtte zich op haar directe omgeving, een vaart in de stad Utrecht (de Klopvaart), als het ware haar ‘achtertuin’. Een stukje natuur in de stad dat op het eerste gezicht alledaags en niet bijster interessant lijkt met hoge flats aan de ene kant en huizen aan de andere kant. Het is water zoals dat in elke stad wel te vinden is en waar je achteloos langs kan fietsen, of zoals de film doet, een moment bij stil kan staan.

De film is een samenwerking met Anne Broeksma, dichteres van het Utrechtse Stadsdichtersgilde, die een poëtische voice-over bij de beelden schreef, en Gerwin Weidenaar, net afgestuurd componist en sound designer, die een klankwereld creëerde waarin de grens tussen bestaand geluid, sound design en muziek vervaagt.
In de film zien we niet alleen de schoonheid van de natuur – zoals de lichtschittering van de zon die strepen op het water zet, een duif die ongenaakbaar in een boom blijft zitten tijdens de stromende regen of een aalscholver die zijn vleugels spreidt – maar vooral ook de ‘interactie’ van dit stukje stadswater met haar bewoners eromheen.
De film is inmiddels te zien geweest op festivals en tv in Nederland, Canada, de Verenigde Staten en Finland.
Tijdens het History, Arts & Science festival in Athene won de documentaire de Award voor ‘Best Direction’. Eerder won de film ook al de Award voor de ‘Best Environmental Documentary’ tijdens het West Side Mountains Doc Festival in Griekenland, de award voor ‘Best Short nature Film’ tijdens het Natourale festival in Wiesbaden, en de ‘Best Experimental Documentary Award’ tijdens het Vaasa Wildlife Filmfestival in Finland. Met steun van de Nederlandse ambassade in Finland konden we naar Vaasa om het festival bij te wonen.

Those who wish to discover nature do not have to leave the city!
Inspired by Dutch filmmakers such as Jorens Ivens and Bert Haanstra, Suzanne van Leendert went looking for a connection with nature, while being in the city. The result is a poetic, associative and experimental film that focuses, over a period of four seasons, on a stretch of water in the middle of the city. A stretch of water that is less than a mile and a half long but where more is going on than you think…
Suzanne focused on her immediate surroundings, a canal in the city of Utrecht (the Klopvaart), her “backyard” so to speak. A slice of nature in the city that at first sight might seem rather mundane and not all that interesting, with high-rise flats on one side and rows of houses on the other. In one way, it is not unlike any stretch of water in any other city. It is a place you might not pay a lot of attention to unless you stop for a moment and take notice, like the film does.
The film is a collaboration with Anne Broeksma, a poet with the Utrecht’s Guild of Poets, who wrote a poetic voice-over to accompany the images, and Gerwin Weidenaar, a recently-graduated composer and sound designer, who created a sound score in which the boundaries between ambient noise, sound design and music all blend together.
The film not only shows the beauty of nature – such as the glare of the sun bouncing off the water, an unflappable pigeon sitting in a tree during a downpour or a cormorant spreading its wings – but also the ‘interaction’ between this stretch of water and the residents that surround it.
The film has been shown on television and at festivals in the Netherlands, Canada, the United States and Finland.
